The example edits are slightly different from the tutorial below.

Clipping Magic gives you the unique capability of combining quick red / green marks with precision vector scalpel cuts, enabling you to clip any image even if the edges are too faint or noisy for the red / green algorithm to handle them gracefully.

To add a cut, select the scalpel then click and drag in the image where you'd like your cut to be made. The same tool also lets you edit the cuts.

Tip: Use cuts sparingly. It is normally best to use the red/green marks for the bulk of the clipping, and then add a few choice cuts where there's poor contrast. It is rare that you'd want to go whole-hog and add cuts along the entire outline.

Scalpel Tool Recently Updated

We recently updated the scalpel tool to make it easier to create long smooth cuts that twist and turn: just click anywhere on the cut to add a node and drag it wherever it's needed. In the previous version nodes could only be added at set points, and every other node was always a sharp corner that could be hard to make smooth.

You can still create corners wherever you need them, just click the blue smooth / corner button on any node to toggle it.

Make A Cut

Select the scalpel, then click and drag in the image to make a cut.

Click and drag anywhere on the curve to bend it.

Divide and Conquer

Make a cut that bridges the entire problematic section, then drag the curve at key points to follow the object contour.

Extend A Cut

Click and drag in the extend zone to add another piece to the cut.

Smooth vs Corner Points

Click on the blue smooth / corner button next to each point to switch between having a corner at that point, or having the curve continue smoothly.

Tip: Double-click the node to toggle it.

Delete Points

Click on the red x next to a point to delete it.

Don't Cross The Cuts

Scalpel cuts that cross with themselves or other cuts will be gray and ignored. Move the cuts so that they don't actually cross to resolve the problem.
